A+

There have been big changes in Madrid TMA area since last year. Unfortunately the situation is worse enough for us. The TMA has spread towards the north, but the worst thing is how we are now when Madrid Barajas Airport is in south configuration.

Anyway we have a NOTAM that protects us partly, so will be able to fly gliders in the north part of the mountain. The NOTAM establishes two areas: one in the southern part close with the mountain and another in the northern part, in the plain. The south area has a limit altitude of 10.500 feet or 3.200 m. above sea level, ( 6.900 feet, 2.100 m. above Santo Tomé) The north area has a limit of 11.500 feet or 3.500 m. above sea level (7.900 feet, 2.400 m. above Santo Tomé)

To understand the reason of these limitations I am going to explain the approach procedure when Barajas is in south configuration. The approach to runway 18R is now from West to East.

Beginning from Salamanca, the arrival goes to a point called EREMA (Coordinates N 41º 04,9’ W 004º 57,2’) The situation is around 14 Kilometres , North of Segovia City, pilots must be at EREMA point at 12.000 feet or above (Around 8.400 feet = 2.550 m above Santo Tomé).

From EREMA the commercial planes go to a point called LALPI that one finds in the coordinates N 40º 57,5’ W 003º 49,2’ This point is placed approximately 2 km to the west of the village of Lozoya, just to the south of Navafría's mountain pass.

Another route comes from a point called EPINA (Coordinates N 40º44’12 W 004º 11’16´) The situation is around 2 Km East of El Espinar in the South face of the Mujer Muerta mountain, to LALPI descending from 12.000 feet to be at LALPI at 11.000 feet. QNH.

The planes have to be compulsory at LALPI point at 11000 feet. Provided the profile of descend is very critical, great angle in the intermediate approach, the commercial planes will be always at 11.000 feet and with flaps out at LALPI to comply with the approach.

What can we do with this situation? Respect strictly the limits of height that it is necessary to support in both areas of the NOTAM. Fly North, fly West, fly East, out of the Standard Arrivals (STARs) Procedures of Madrid TMA. You must know where the routes of the Arrivals and Departures are.

Another hot tip. The situation is critical only when Madrid is in South configuration, because the approach to the runway 18R of Madrid Barajas Airport is done by the route that we have described before. And how when Madrid Barajas is in North configuration? The legality is the same, but the practical situation is different The north part of the mountain is affected, in this case, only by the Departures procedures of Madrid Barajas Airport, and in that case the planes cross the mountain to more considerable heights, of the order of Flight Levels 150 or above, that is to say around 4.000 meters above ground level

How can I know if Madrid is in North or South configuration? Select in your radio equipment the frequency 118,25. In this frequency you can listen the ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) of Madrid. You will hear this: “… Runway in use for arrival 18 right and 18 left…” or: “ …Runway in use for arrival 33 right and 33 left…”

If you hear that the runway in use for arrival is 18 right and 18 left it means that Madrid is in south configuration, in this case pay close attention to the recommendations that we have given here. If you hear that the runway in use is 33 left and 33 right, the legality is the same, but you will not find big jets flying to EREMA or LALPI points at 11.000 feet.

Please, we ask you to follow these recommendations very strictly; it is for your safety and for the safety of the passengers' planes
