English Speaking Glider Pilots In Rhône Alpes?

Bonjour à toutes et à tous,

 

Together with my husband Erik, I live in Lyon just over a year now. We flew gliders in the Netherlands for 8 years and would really like to continue gliding in France. Being new to the language, the culture and yes, flying in mountainous areas, we would like to take our first steps this season in the French world of gliding.

 

I'm writing on this forum in English, because we hope to find a French glider pilot (you?) who can introduce us to « vol à voile en France ». Where my level of French is getting better everyday, my husband is still traveling the 'petit peu' regions ;-)

 

We're looking for a club in the Lyon area (with a maximum of one hour drive away).

 

I hope you will consider replying and help two spontaneous Dutch people out with reconnecting with their passion!

Hi Ilse !

If you want to fly in the Alps in a one-hour range around Lyon, you can go to Challes-les-Eaux, Grenoble, Romans or Valence.
But there are also a lot of other clubs around you in a flatter land.

You should contact these clubs in order to know if non-French-speaking pilots are allowed, and if an English-speaking instructor is available.

In mine for example (Chambéry-Challes) we use to make English-speaking peoplle fly, but we ask them to speak French, at least a little, to fly on solo.
If you want to check if it is currently possible, please call on 04.79.72.97.19. Anna, our (Italian) secretary, is fluent in English.

We will definitely take all clubs into consideration. The best option for us would be if there's any capacity during both weekends and weekdays, so we can fit our day at the airfield around our working schedules in the best way.

 

Do all clubs mentioned above offer weekdays capacity when there's enough interest from members on a certain weekday?

Hallo Ilse,

 

Ik vlieg intussen 20 jaar in Challes. Is het
perfekt? Nee, zeker niet, vooral het weer in de Noord-Alpen is niet zo
goed als in het zuiden. Maar, om te leren in de bergen te vliegen is het
een heel goed adres. Je kunt starten met de lier of met de sleep en
direkt naast het veld heb je twee heuvels (bergen voor Nederlandse begrippen) waar
je goed weg komt. Sleepstarts zijn vooral aan goede dagen interessant; je
laat je op ongeveer 1800 meter slepen (zo tussen 10.00 en 12.00) en je bent dan
voor de rest van de dag weg. Als het weer niet zo goed is, of je bent die
dag niet zo geambitioneerd ga je om 12.00 in de kantine eten (belangrijk voor
de Fransen) en ga je vanaf 13.00 met de lier omhoog. De klub heeft een
omvangrijk park aan toestellen... daar is in ieder geval iets voor jullie
daarbij. Na het vliegen kan je in de bar iets drinken en ook avond eten
(in de hoog-zomer tussen 21.00 en 23.00) Er is ook een mogelijkheid the
slapen... een beetje primitief maar eigenlijk alles wat je nodig hebt en
voor onder 15 Euro pp ongemeen gunstig.

 

Wij hebben zelf ook een paar jaar in Lyon gewoond.
Rijtijd is ongeveer 1 uur. Of het het juiste adres is voor jullie?
Dat moet je zelf beoordelen. Stap in de auto en ga kijken.
"Briefing" is om 10.00.

 

Het is natuurlijk wel een franse klub. Als je helemaal
geen frans spreekt en verstaat dan wordt dat niets. Als je echter
voldoende frans hebt om je in het dagelijks leven in Lyon door te komen, dan
lukt het wel.

 

En omdat veel text dan toch war "droog" is, twee
kleine video clips van materiaal dat ik vorig jaar heb opgenomen. De
eerste is van een vlucht vanuit Challes, de tweede vanuit StCrepin (we waren
met ongeveer 10 man uit Challes voor twee weken vliegen in StCrepin).

 

 

 

 

Op de website van de klub vindt je nog meer videos,
informatie etc maar uiteindelijk moet je zelf gaan kijken. Ik ben, een
beetje afhankelijk van het weer, er de volgende week (week 18) en dan vanaf
hemelsvaart voor 4 weken.

Problably nobody speaks dutch in Corbas but you can find people, as me, able to welcome you in english. Our club is open every day, weekdays and weekends, in order to make everybody able to fly at any time either on mono or double seats gliders.

 

But as I said formerly the best way for you is to come to our club in order to see our gliders fleet and our installations.
